This Art deco chair was a terrific find by the current owner.  Although the condition of the chair initially looked very shabby, once stripped down the frame, (when given a little attention) was very strong and in sound condition.  This was to be a complete restoration job.  A new sprung and stuffed seat was applied using traditional techniques and further hair and wadding provided for the arms and back.
The client chose to finish the chair in a beautiful tan leather by Foss Leathers and a feather cushion covered in a richly coloured velvet by Amberly Manor.  Detailing was picked out with stud work.

Victorian inlaid sofa

Antique Victorian inlaid sofa, reupholstered in the French style with Louis XV arm pads, deep buttoned back and sprung seat

Victorian inlaid sofa, reupholstered in the French style with Louis XV arm pads, deep buttoned back and sprung seat

An inlaid, mid-Victorian sofa that was in need of significant attention.  Stripping down can reveal many hidden secrets, and it was a great moment to discover the original buttoned back hidden beneath.  The rickety frame needed to be eased apart and the dowels re-glued.  A couple of wax polishes and it was ready to be worked upon.
The upholstery lacked a definitive style so the decision was taken to block-out the corners of the seat (in the French style) and create a sprung seat with contours that reflected the profile of the frame.  The back was upholstered using traditional French deep buttoning techniques and delicate armrests were applied to complement the slender proportions of the frame.
The sofa was finished in a damask from Northcroft and French braid by Houles.
